Many who accept the theory of evolution dont relate it to matters of importance in their own lives. There appears to be two walls of resistance, one denying the theory altogether and the other denying its relevance to human affairs. But according to David Sloan Wilson, an evolutionary biologist at Binghamton University in New York, everyone can be a good evolutionist at least if you take Wilsons interdisciplinary classes in evolution. Wilson initiated, developed and directs the universitys new Evolutionary Studies track, or EvoS for short, which seeks to explore all of creation with the basic principles of evolution. According to Wilson, it is perhaps the first program that attempts to make evolution a common language for the study of all human-related subjects, in addition to the natural world, at a campuswide scale. EvoS, which began in 2002, includes more than 50 faculty members representing 15 departments. Wilson hopes that the program becomes a model for evolution education that can be copied at other colleges and universities. Wilson, who is jointly appointed in the biology and anthropology departments at Binghamton, describes himself as an evolutionary biologist who studies humans as part of the rest of life. He designed his program based upon the discussions and publications of his fellow evolutionary-minded colleagues. He hopes to teach students the basics and implications of evolution so that they can continue to develop their interests throughout their college career. In doing so, students will learn how to study every subject, no matter their major or profession, through the lens of evolution, he said. The program: Students are introduced to EvoS through the introductory course, Evolution for Everyone those who enroll come from majors as diverse as art, business, chemistry, cinema, computer science, creative writing, economics, education, engineering, English, history, human development, linguistics, management, mathematics, nursing, philosophy, physics, political science and psychology. Students, faculty and administrators share great support and enthusiasm for EvoS. Although it might be expected that politically conservative students would embrace the course material less enthusiastically than liberals, this was not the case, said Wilson, who added the course was equally effective across the political spectrum. According to Wilson, the typical student attending the Evolution for Everyone class was moderately religious, with others ranging from committed atheists to committed believers. Numerous students wrote at length about their religious upbringing and values in their first assigned essay on the topic, What I know about evolution and its relevance to human affairs. The final requirement of Evolution for Everyone was to have the students choose their own topic to explore from an evolutionary perspective, culminating in a poster session that emulated a scientific conference at the end of the semester. Many students become very motivated to study their topic from an evolutionary perspective and address such topics as adoption, alcoholism, attractiveness, body piercing, depression, eating disorders, fashion, fear, hand dominance, homosexuality, marriage, play, sexual jealousy, sibling rivalry, social roles, suicide, video games and yawning. The topics are posted on the course Web site. Students visit each others posters during the session, providing yet another demonstration of how evolutionary theory can be used to approach a diversity of subjects. After completing the class, students may select other program courses or enroll in the program as part of their major. Those who formally enroll in the program are assigned a faculty adviser to help them tailor a curriculum. EvoS also provides a campuswide seminar series held on a biweekly basis, featuring a variety of topics from an evolutionary perspective. Recent seminar topics have included the vocal mimicry of wild parrots, the cultural evolution of agriculture and computer simulation models for evolution. The fact that all of these topics can be understood and enjoyed by a single audience of undergraduate students, graduate students and faculty is proof that evolutionary theory provides a common language that can be spoken across disciplines, Wilson explained. Students, faculty and administrators, share great support and enthusiasm for EvoS. Most faculty in human-related subjects did not receive evolutionary training during their own higher education, Wilson said. Of course that makes sense, and youd never DREAM of trying to attract a bee with vinegar, would you? So why is it that so many of us behave as though nagging, bitching, judging, scolding, being angry, or any of those other methods we use to try to get our men to shape up and fly right would work any better at attracting him to what we want? No matter how great a man we have, its inevitable that hell let us down. My perspective is that they never mean to hurt or disappoint us; its just that the difference in our wiring means hes going to overlook things that are SO obvious to us. Hes in mono-focus mode most of the time, while our multi-focus mode makes it hard to understand how he could possibly have _(fill in the blank here )__. LEARNING TO DO IT DIFFERENTLY Now that weve covered some of the reasons its hard for so many women to manage their relationships in a way that creates harmony, happiness and ease, I want to suggest some other ways to try to get your needs met. Try this program with your husband instead Ill bet things will be much better for you both: 1. Always assume he means well and wants to make you happy, no matter WHAT hes just done. That alone will help you stay connected and loving with him. 2. When you become aware of a need or a want, let him know about it (of course, dont do this while hes watching a sporting event, or working on anything else for that matter, because it wont register!). Then let him do it the way hes going to do it, rather than micromanaging the how or the when he chooses. Thats about trusting him to do it, which is key to your success. 3. Whenever he comes REMOTELY close to doing what you want, let him know how pleased you are (in whatever way you can genuinely express that). Keep in mind that most men gravitate toward those things that make them feel good and SHY away from anything that makes them feel bad. Its up to you which one of these categories you fall into. 4. When he is doing something you really dont like, ignore it (of course, if its feeling dangerous to you, mention youre feeling scared and would love it if hed stop/change it). This is really along the lines of the most effective and popular training techniques used by animal trainers positive reinforcement (in #3 above), and no recognition of behavior that they dont want repeated. 5. When you are upset with him, be vulnerable about why, rather than launching in to the blaming YOU statements about him, which tend to make anyone defensive (and when someones defensive, not much is going to get through). 6. Dont make EVERYTHING a do-or-die thinglearn to let some stuff go, so that when something is a really big deal to you, you can bring it up to him and its not going to feel like a Chicken Little situation to him (remember the story? The sky was always about to fall, so that eventually no one listened even when the sky really WAS about to fall.) By Douglas Hanna Marketing planning must be really difficult and complex, otherwise why would there be so many books written on the subject right? Well, Im just enough of a skeptic to believe that many of these books were designed more to make money for their publishers and authors than to make marketing planning simple and understandable. I spent more than 30 years working with very successful small business people who never wrote a single marketing plan. Why didnt they need complex, 100-page marketing plans chock full of statistics, charts and graphs like the experts recommend? Its because they knew exactly where they wanted to take their companies and how to get them there and they were universally successful. The fact is they basically carried their product marketing plans around in their heads. Thats how simple marketing planning can be. In fact, if you strip marketing planning down to its most basic elements, you could just about write your plan on the back of a napkin. Okay, that might be a bit of an oversimplification, but lets look at the six basic things you need to know for successful marketing planning. 1. The situation. Is this a new or existing product or service? If it has competition, how is it better than the competition? Bigger? Lasts longer? Easier to use? Offers more features? Priced better? You should be able to sum up your situation in a couple of sentences. If not, maybe you dont really understand the situation. 2. The market. How big is the market for your product or service? This can be defined in terms of total dollars, number of units sold or any other quantifiable number. The important thing is to know the size of your market because only by knowing this can you define a marketing objective. You also need to define what the market looks like — Males, age 25-45? Soccer Moms? Working mothers? Seniors? Childless couples? A market isnt just numbers, its people. And its important to understand where they are economically, whats important to them, and what problems you can help them solve. 3. Strategy. Now that you have defined your situation and your market, it should be easy to develop a marketing strategy. For example, if your product is footless, control top panty hose, your strategy might be to focus sales efforts on figure-conscience women age 34-45 during the spring and summer months. 4. Tactics. If strategy is what you intend to do, tactics is what you need to do to accomplish it. In the case of the strategy example above, the tactics might be: – Begin sales efforts against distributors by Feb. 1 – Have products in distribution pipeline by March 1 for delivery to retailers no later than April 1. – Begin concentrated radio advertising in 12 key markets by April 15 and so on 5. Objective(s). You can frame your objectives any way you want but you have to assign a number and a date. Its no enough to say, Successfully introduce the new product by years end. In the immortal words of Yogi Berra, If you dont know where youre going, you might end up somewhere else. If you dont include a number and a time, you will never know whether or not you were really successful. Write objectives like sell 5,000 units by December 31. Then, on January 1, you can count sales and determine how successful you were. Best case, you will find you sold 5,000 or more units and will know your marketing planning was right on. And if you didnt meet the objective? You should be able to at least learn a lesson and do better next time. 6. Budgeting. The final thing you need to consider is how much money you can spend to meet your objective. The best way to do this is break down your budgeting by tactics. If you need to reach 100,000 women to sell 10,000 units of your product, do you have the money to do this in terms or radio, newspaper, TV or direct mail? Do you need collateral materials such as brochures or in-store displays? How much will these things cost? Depending on your product or service, you may also have to hire a PR firm or an advertising agency. Be sure to budget for this expense. Can you add more elements to your planning? Of course. Just go buy one of these marketing textbooks and youll find pages and pages of information that could be incorporated into your plan. The point here is that maybe you dont have to make your marketing planning a huge and laborious project. Do what many of my clients have done keep it simple, something you can just carry around in your head if thats your style. The important things are your situation, your market, your strategy and tactics, your objective and your budget. Know these things and youre well on your way to success. By Fran Barnwell It is becoming more and more obvious these days that we need to recycle as much as we can, and anyone with a garden has a head start and can make a great contribution. To many novice gardeners, including myself, this subject can be somewhat difficult to grasp; but in fact it is really straightforward – there are just a few very simple rules: You need a compost bin, and the type you decide on rather depends on the size of your garden, but there are a couple of options: A purpose built plastic bin purchased from a garden centre, not too expensive; and you just fill up from the top and a few months later, you can take compost from a small hatch at the base. Alternatively, if you can wield a saw and some nails, you can make a wooden slatted enclosure, one metre square – or you can buy them ready made – and cover it with a piece of old carpet to keep the worst of the weather off. What you can compost: – all uncooked vegetable and fruit peelings – teabags, tea leaves and coffee grounds – egg shells – dead flowers from the house – and from the garden, soft prunings – spent bedding plants, dead leaves, lawn mowings – spent compost from hanging baskets or containers – some dryer materials such as shredded pape – rabbit and guinea pig bedding. The only thing you have to be careful about is to mix different types of material; if you have too many grass clippings in a big mass, they will turn soggy and slimy, or if there is too much paper and prunings, it will be too dry. So keep an eye on it, especially if you are using the wooden enclosure, and mix it with a fork occasionally. What NOT to compost: – all meat products and bones; bread, cooked food – these will attract vermin – dog or cat waste – woody material – which takes too long to compost – weeds – these can ‘infect’ your compost with their seeds – anything that is non-biodegradable. And because you won’t always feel like taking a trip to the compost heap when it’s wet or cold or every time you peel vegetables why not keep a lidded container by the back door which you can fill up and then make the trip to the compost bin every one or two days? Over a period of time – 3 months to 1 year, depending on conditions – all this matter will have broken down into lovely dark brown crumbly compost, which you can fork into your beds and borders. It makes an excellent soil conditioner and can be used as surface mulch, helping conserve moisture and discourage weeds. You can also convert fallen leaves into wonderful compost. Rake up any leaves from your lawn – you may have to do this several times over the autumn – and collect them from the borders. Put them all into a black waste sack, sprinkle with water, put a few holes around the sack with a fork, tie the top, and leave it in a corner for about a year.
